Don’t tell your hair stylist I told you, but you can totally do your own platinum blonde hair in the comfort of of your own home.

Well, I say that buuuutttttt of course I would preface by saying to do it at your own risk! I personally tried it using this method and did not have a horror story at all. In fact I had just the opposite. I was shocked at how beautiful, shiny, vibrant, and perfectly platinum blonde my hair was!

When I shared this over on Insta, I had so many people asking me how I did it, so I figured I’d share it with you over here on the blog.

There’s a process to it all, but to be fair I am not at all a hair stylist. I’ve never taken courses, or classes, or had any sort of cosmetology training. So if you ask me how to dye your hair medium brunette, or ginger red… I have absolutely no idea how you’d do that.

But for this color specifically, I watched this YouTube video and followed it exactly. I highly recommend you watch the video before trying this at home!!! It will give you a much better understanding of how to do this process because it combines the visual of a video and step-by-step instructions.

Why I Wanted DIY Platinum Blonde Hair

I’m a busy mommy of two littles and my time is crazy and sporatic and exhausting at times. While my hair stylist is absolutely thebomb.com (and she still cuts my hair), she lives a good 40 minutes from my house. Taking the time for a hair color along with a hair cut and all that, just becomes a big dent in my very limited time.

So since I knew it was going to be a big investment of time whenever I got my hair done, I’d procrastinate in the worst way because I couldn’t figure out when to squeeze it in.

I needed a way to keep my hair looking fresh while also accommodating my schedule. And my bank account, let’s face it. 😉

How To Do Your Own Platinum Ash Blonde Hair At Home

So as we already agreed upon, you’re going to check out the YouTube video that I learned all of this from before you attempt your own blonde hair. We don’t want any horror stories, so be fully informed before you attempt this. And if you’re not sure you want to take the risk, just stick to your tried and true salon stylist because they’re the real professionals. I’m just a girl in her bathroom hoping her hair doesn’t fall out when she rinses out the bleach.

Haha kidding. Kind of.

By the way, in the video she applies coconut oil to her hair before starting the process. I’ve never done that but I think I need to from now on because my hair does get a little dry after a few washes.

Ok now that we’ve got that out of the way, let’s have a brief overview of the process for this whole shindig.

Step 1: Bleach

You’ll start by bleaching your hair. Mix together the Quick Blue and the 30 Developer. brush the mixture onto your roots (if just touching up), or onto your whole head of hair. Do a section at a time (like you see in the video) so that you don’t miss anything. Have a friend or partner help you with this so you can make sure you get it on there and don’t miss any chunks of hair.

Once that’s on, you’ll leave it in for about 20 minutes before rinsing and washing. If you feel like it needs another round of bleech, you can do that after you’ve let it air dry. I recommend waiting until the next day if you need a round two of bleach.

The first time I did this, I waited until the following morning to do the second round of bleach. Now when I touch-up my hair, I only do one round of bleach each time.

When you rinse out the bleach you’ll notice your hair looking a little yellow. This is normal. If it’s too dark still, or too yellow, you may want to try a second round of bleach before moving onto the next step. You can see here that there’s still some yellowish tint to my hair, but it turns out fine after the toner.

Towel dry a bit before you move on.

Step 2: Toner

You’ve bleached your hair (once or twice, whatever you decided), and now you’re ready to apply toner. This is when you mix the T18 Ash Blonde Toner with the 20 Developer. Apply it to your hair and leave it in for about five minutes. You’ll most likely notice your hair turning purple. That’s a good thing!

Rinse, shampoo, and condition.

Step 3: Style

Yep! That’s basically it. Now it’s time to let your hair air dry, or use a cool hair dryer. Style it how you like, and enjoy your new sassy, inexpensive, easily accomplished golden (or silvery blonde) locks!

This is as detailed as I’m going to get in this post, so make sure you watch the video for more!

What You’ll Need for DIY Platinum Blonde Hair

You’ll need to get all the materials necessary for coloring your own hair. I grabbed mine from Sally Beauty Supply but quickly realized that you can get everything you need right on Amazon! So here’s your list of items!

Notice there are two different developers you’ll need. You’ll need a 20 strength and a 30 strength! Using the same strength for both will not give you the same look!

Check out the list at the bottom of this post for pictures if you’re visual like me!

How Much It Costs

There are different sizes you can get of each different product, so it depends on that. But when I tried this for the first time I got a small, travel-looking size of each item because I wanted to make sure it was actually going to work.

So that first purchase I made was probably around $20 or less, which is waaaayyy less than you spend at a hair salon… though a professional hair colorist is worth her weight in gold!

I suggest getting small sizes at first, and then buying the larger sizes if you think you’ll want to keep touching up your hair in this way.

How Long It Takes

The whole process could take anywhere from about an hour, to a couple of days. It all depends on whether you want to do one or two rounds of bleach, and whether you let your hair completely air dry between rounds of bleach (which I highly recommend). Make sure you have a good chunk of time and nowhere to be afterwards so you can concentrate and do it correctly.

Best Shampoo And Conditioner

My highest recommendation is that which my hair stylist recommended to me. She recommends Olaplex, and that’s what she uses on her own hair. Good news! You can get it on Amazon! Here is a link for the shampoo, and the link for conditioner.

Purple Shampoo and Purple Conditioner

You may have heard of people using purple shampoo and conditioner. This is something you’ll use occasionally. NOT every time you wash your hair! If you do use it too much, it’ll be way too harsh on your hair. But it is a worthy investment because you’ll use it every now and then when you notice your hair looking yellow or brassy.

You can get this on Amazon, or in your local Target or somewhere similar.

There you have it!

That’s what I did to transform my own hair. For some context, my hair is naturally medium brown with plenty of warmth to it. And when I did this the first time it was a medium ash brown.

Alright my friend. Study all the steps and give it a try! Just remember that bleach is harsh and strong! There ARE horror stories out there. I don’t have one, but just be cautious and don’t do this on a whim. Be sure you know what you’re doing and if you’re unsure in any way, ask someone who knows about hair, just to make sure you’re not venturing into territory you’re not ready for. Otherwise, have fun!!!

And here’s a photo of each of the products I mentioned. You can tap on any of the links above to find them on Amazon.

You are beautiful no matter your hair color, love. Don’t forget it!
