At this point in my massive weight-loss and health journey I’ve discovered a love for exercise and usually don’t have trouble figuring out what exercise to do when I don’t feel like exercising.

But no matter how much of a fitness guru you are, we all have those days.

Those days when the busyness of life gets to us and the minutes are few. Or when we can’t fathom breaking a sweat or huffing and puffing through a workout. Or you just plain don’t feel like getting all dressed and in sneakers and all that jazz, and heading out the door to make it happen.

Let me help you figure out what kind of exercise to do when you don’t feel like exercising…

I mean let’s be serious here. There are some days when your body just needs to rest. You need to recover. And once you do, you’ll be ready to get back out there and run through troops and leap over walls.

If you need a recovery day, take one. If you desperately need sleep, get a some sleep. Rest and recovery is just as important as exercise.

When you don’t feel like exercising, but you know you need to, you need to figure out something to do. Because consistency is what creates a lifestyle.

And that’s what we want.

Taking a day off is great. But when it turns into several days, and then several weeks, then we’ve reverted into old habits.

And that’s what we don’t want.

So what kind of exercise should you do?

I’m so glad you asked.

In this post, I’m not giving you a knock-out, amazing, burn 50,000 calories type of workout. Because you don’t need that plan when you absolutely positively do not feel like exercising.

Instead, I want you to think about what you can do. Today. When you don’t feel like it, and you’re tired, and the whole world is pushing against your plan to get in some kind of exercise.

What can you do today? That’s what you should focus on for today.

Sounds simple, right? Well, that’s because it is!

But what typically happens is that we don’t feel like exercising so we just… don’t.

In order to counteract that so we can trudge forward in the pursuit of the healthiest version of ourselves, we’ve got to take a moment to pause, take a breath, think clearly, and ask ourselves what we can do.

Maybe 7 ideas pop into your head. But if they don’t…

Here’s what kind of exercise to do when you don’t feel like exercising:

Go for a walk. Turn on some loud music and dance around the house. Take your kids to the park and commit to getting up and chasing them around for 20 minutes. Do jumping jacks, and squats, and push-ups-on-your-knees, and lunges, and burpees, until you start to feel that dewy feeling on your skin.

Do you see what I’m getting at here?

I don’t want you to over complicate things. I literally want you to just. move. your. body.

It’s literally that simple. Can you park further away at the grocery store so you have to walk further? Can you get outside and do that yard work you’ve been wanting to get to? Can you go for a nature walk with your toddler? Can you fly him around the house like he’s an airplane?

What can you do to simply move your body today?

It’s a simple shift in perspective…

When you start to see it as moving your body, and not “exercise” or “working out” you can open up more possibilities. Try new things. And eventually, figure out what kind of movement you absolutely love.

That, my friend, is when it becomes easy.

And then… it becomes a habit.

And then… it becomes a lifestyle.

So when you can’t figure out what kind of exercise to do, simply pause and ask yourself “how can I simply move my body today?”

Do that.
