Ever wonder where all the fat goes when it leaves your body? Throughout my entire 160-pound weight loss journey, I never once pondered that question until my cousin sent me a Facebook message and told me the answer.

I guess I didn’t really care, as long as it was making it’s way out of my life. But still I was pretty intrigued when I found out where it does disappears to! I turned to the fitness gurus at LesMills to find the answer.

Some people think fat turns to muscle, or that it makes its exit through the colon. Both of how assumptions are wrong.

The truth of the matter is that it vanishes into thin air. I mean, sorta.

Actually it turns into carbon dioxide and water. That’s right – fat exits your body mostly through the air you breathe.

“When you begin to run low on fuel you produce a hormone that, when mixed with oxygen, breaks down fat in order to use its energy. When fat is metabolized, it needs to go somewhere. Once converted to carbon dioxide and water, over 80 percent of each measurement of fat leaves the body as CO2. The rest is released as sweat and urine.”

-Will Macdonald, LesMills

The tricky part is that you have to really get to huffing and puffing if you truly want to melt the fat away. This means that higher-intensity workouts are a great idea for burning the extra jiggle away. Things like HIIT (high intensity interval training), and exercises that really get the heart rate up, are your golden tickets for melting the pounds away without losing muscle.

So whether you’re out for a run, or you’re hitting the gym, remember that all that breathlessness is a good sign that you’re right on track with your fitness goals!
