Before I even open my eyes in the morning I’m already thinking about that hot, fresh cup of coffee that will soon be jolting me into the reality of the day. Seriously, since having kids I cannot go a day without my java jolt. I sip my cup of joe and the world slowly becomes a beautiful place while the sun peeks over the morning horizon.

At least that’s what’s happening in my mind.

Delicious Morning Coffee

When you love coffee as much as I do, you have to find a way around the sugary goodness of decadent creamers and insulin-skyrocketing sweeteners. In fact this is one of the questions I get asked time and time again. How do you drink your coffee? Because let’s face it, that sweet-smelling aroma is enticing, but it’s what we put in the coffee that makes it taste oh so good. For most of us, just plain coffee, is anything but delightful.

So how can you enjoy a delicious cup of coffee while keeping it healthy? I’m so glad you asked. I have a couple of options for you. There are actually tons of ways you can health-up your cup, but I’ll just stick to the ones that are personally tried and true.

First, let’s talk about sweetener. Actual sugar (whether raw, organic, or regular) is tough on the body. We already know that. What happens is it takes your blood sugar on a rollercoaster ride, which leads to weight struggles, sluggishness, and a crash later in the day. Even something as healthy and wholesome as honey can do the same thing. It’s not that we shouldn’t enjoy healthy versions of these things (we’ll talk about that in another post), but they should be consumed in moderation. And if you’re like me, my coffee consumption practices do not fall into the “occasionally” category. Since I drink it so regularly, I find it far more wise to use a sweetener that is way healthier.

While you might think I’m going to suggest artificial sweeteners, quite the contrary is true. I ditched those years ago when I found something way yummier and way healthier.

As a rule of thumb, I try to stick to sweeteners that are made of Stevia, Xylitol, or Erythritol. These are more natural sugars that do not cause a spike or drop in blood sugar. The key is to steer clear of sweeteners that contain Maltodextrin, Dextrose, or any other added fillers.

Keep It Healthy And Delicious

My favorite natural sweetener can be found at Amazon or Walmart. It’s called Pyure and is around $7 per bag. It tastes amazing. I use about a Tablespoon of that in my coffee every morning. Then, I sprinkle in about 1/2 teaspoon of this Organic Stevia Extract. Basically, I use the Pyure for flavor, and the Stevia extract for a little added sweetness. That, my friend is how I enjoy a cup of coffee, black.

Don’t worry, if you’re a creamer lover, I’ve got you covered! In order to stay away from sugar, I love this creamer. Califia Farms, almond milk creamer is dairy free, and if you choose the Unsweetened version (since you’ve already added healthy sweeteners), you’re golden! An added bonus is this is dairy free, which is a plus!

If you need a little something more, grab a flavor extract from your local supermarket! You can do something delicious, like caramel or mocha, or you can stick to the basic deliciousness of a simple vanilla.

Remember that it’s most important to give yourself time to play around with flavors. You’ll have to get used to he amounts of each item you use, so stay in the game until you figure out the perfect concoction just for you! There’s nothing like that first cup of coffee in the morning, but it makes things even better knowing that you didn’t have to sacrifice your health  in order to really enjoy it!

Now go warm up your coffee, throw it in a travel mug, and head to the grocery story! 😉
